Methodist Wesley Guild
The Wesley Guild is a family fellowship based within the Methodist Church but open to all. It seeks to bring together people of different age groups, outlooks and background and to produce a comprehensive programme to include the diverse interests, concerns and activities of the whole family of God. Its motto used by Guilds all over the world is:
“ONE HEART, ONE WAY”
The Guild began as a movement primarily for young people in the 1890’s. Its founder was the Rev. W.B Fitzgerald, a Methodist Minister, who started a “Guild of the Good Life” at Roscoe Place, Leeds. From the beginning it included a wide range of activities but it was based on personal commitment to Christ as the Lord of all good life. It was adopted as a movement for the whole Church at the Conference of 1896. Though its primary aim was to enlist young people and train them for leadership there has never been an age limit within the Guild movement.
Traditionally the aims of the Guild have been succinctly expressed in four words known to many generations of Guilders as “the four C’s”
