Atheros AR242x in Ubuntu 8.04

A short time ago I changed my Toshiba A215 S4747 for a new Toshiba M305D-S4830. Obviously, you do not let the Windows Vista with this new notebook or crazy, but he immediately got a Linux. I tried Fedora 9 and Ubuntu, and the two went exactly the same thing: I do not detected or Wifi or Ethernet plate. That problemon! As the Wifi I expected it, but what of the eth ever happened to me, luckily, everything has a solution.

The first thing I did was install ndiswrapper and the driver of the same plate of my previous Toshiba. In my case it was for Ubuntu 64-bit, but it could have been equally for 32 bits. Here they let the driver for both versions, should you want.

To verify you are reading plate to think about, you tell me that the command that shows the model of the plate reads ( lspci ), which is also known as Atheros AR5007EG:

06:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications Inc. AR242x 802.11abg Wireless PCI Express Adapter (rev 01 )

Well, the issue is that the Wifi left foot, and it worked perfectly for a while, until he got off the latest updates to Ubuntu 8.04 and ahi dream. While everything worked perfectly (Ati video card, network board, USB 2.0), stopped walking the WiFi, and there was no way to do it again to go. Google enough, I found out there that this board was supported by Madwifi, or is a native driver and without ndiswrapper. But was not the latest version of madwifi, but one in particular relating to a branch. Well, got off, compile and actually walked all :D. Les story as (from the console):

1) Uninstaller ndiswrapper: sudo apt-get remove ndiswrapper

(if they want, they can simply put on the list of modules to directly blocked is not lifted by the system and ready. For that, they write: sudo gedit / etc / modprobe.d / blacklist ‘to’ and add a line at the end of the file that says blacklist ndiswrapper )

2) install all the tools for compiling:

sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic build-essential bin86 sharutils

In my case, got off the headers of the version 2.6.24-21, corresponding with my version of the kernel.

3) Download this version of Madwifi. We are positioned on the download directory and decompress the madwifi us down. In my case, the desktop:

cd $ HOME / Desktop

tar-cvzf madwifi.tar.gz

cd madwifi

4) uninstall any previous version:

sudo make uninstall

5) compiled and installed this version:

make clean

make

sudo make install

6) Go to System – Administration – Drivers Hardware and enabled HAL and support for Atheros.

Controladores de Atheros habilitados Controlling Atheros enabled

We will ask for reboot. Before that, we do one thing plus, to be sure. Add the module ath_pci in the last row of the file / etc / modules:

sudo gedit / etc / modules
‘to’ and we write

ath_pci

Save and Close. Now if, reboot and it should go. If you look at the screenshot that I made them up, they will see that I have WIF.

Many of these tips were taken from MadWifi FirstTimeHowTo Tutorial: http://madwifi.org/wiki/UserDocs/FirstTimeHowTo

Edit: The same was also tested in a Toshiba A205 S5880 and went perfect, also with Ubuntu 8.04 64 bit .

ATI Catalyst 8.10

AMD - ATI In the Service of 8.10 AMD drivers for their ATI graphics cards.

This version of the driver might be a little controversial, since it was published hours before another version of the driver but only for users of Ubuntu. The official driver is limited to correcting a series of errors present in earlier versions, but still not to include support for X. Org 7.4 or the Linux kernel 2.6.27, so that leaves users of the official version of the driver without support until a new version to be published next month.

On the other hand, due to the imminent release of Ubuntu 8.10, which includes precisely X. Org 7.4 and kernel 2.6.27, was released hours before a driver in the Ubuntu repositories that includes without this support. The non-inclusion in the official version of this suggests that is still in “beta”, so it remains to be seen as the driver is behaving in systems with Ubuntu 8.10.

The list of changes in the driver can see in the official announcement on the website of the driver. As usual, the download of this driver for x86 and x86_64 can be made via Web at AMD.

Through notifying Nukaway by the departure of the new driver.

Upgrade to OpenOffice.org 3 in Linux

Now that this new version came out (although I’m trying, and something postearé), many want to upgrade to this version. It is very easy, few steps:

  1. First you download the latest version (in my case, for Debian / Ubuntu) from here.
  2. Before you install this version, we have to uninstall the previous one. For that, we wrote:

     sudo apt-get remove openoffice *.*

  3. Assuming that you are the brazenness OpenOffice.org 3, decompress it. From the console, use the command:

     tar-zxvf OOo_3.0.0_LinuxIntel_install_en-US_deb.tar.gz

  4. We go to the directory of DEBS:

     cd OOO300_m9_native_packed-1_en-US.9358/DEBS /
  5. We install everything:

     sudo dpkg-i *. deb

  6. Install the integration on the desktop:

     cd desktop-integration

  Sudo dpkg-i-openoffice.org3.0 debian-menus_3.0-9354_all.deb

That’s it! It would have preferred a script update easier, but good, this works jewel. It is very important that uninstalling the previous one, but this did not walk them. And of course, so long as toys with the system, BACKUP MADE PRIOR.

Livestation: watching TV over the Internet

The Internet TV service is becoming more common, and there are many websites that offer free or through a subscription rather economically. An example of these portals is Joost, who recently decided to migrate all Web flash (like YouTube) and put aside his client desktop (which only ran under Windows, and it was bastaaaante pesadito I must admit). We also have over there at the service known as Hulu, Veoh, Dailymotion or YouTube.

There are also some programs such as Winamp, the wmplayer, the MPlayer or Totem, which allow us to see streamings TV online and some (like the case of Winamp) include a manager of this content online.

A while ago I found out there surfing the Internet portal LiveStation, who offer this service along with software that is really very comfortable. What I liked is that this program is available for Windows XP and Vista (does not require Silverlight), for Mac (Tiger and Leopard) and Linux (say it is experimental, but the truth I go to Wonderland). < >

There are several stations supported by them, and some that are hundreds more out there running around, and while they do not take care of the quality of these channels, which I have seen going very well. And unlike Joost, the people of Livestation still betting on the desktop clients.

The truth, I loved the service, much like the presentation quality. Here are some screenshots of the customer left:
