Your title is the only item readers consider to determine whether they will read your blog post or not so the importance of how to get it right cannot be overemphasized. A good title will draw readers into reading your post but a poor one will be ignored by readers. Below are a few pointers you should know about when writing your next title.
A title should communicate the benefit. – Your title should hint to the reader what they will gain by reading your post.
It should stir a debate – even before reading the post itself the title should be able to create controversy and the reader will take a position thus your post becomes a must read.
Put it in question form – study shows that posts in question form are read more than others. They also attract more comments from readers.
Personalized titles – By using a term such as ‘you’ the reader will feel as if you are addressing that post to him / her personally. This will attract comments from your readers.
Use keywords – By using keywords in your search engine readers will find your post.
Make promises – Use this one only if you can back up your story and fulfill your promises.
After you have written your post and framed your title you should do the following:
Let your fellow bloggers read it.
It is advisable to have a blog buddy who can help you assess the quality of your posts. A quick conversation with your log buddy will improve your title considerably.
Update your titles.
This may not be very common with most bloggers but updating your title once in a while after publishing improves the traffic it generates. It is however not advisable to update a title of a post that is clearly not doing well.
Put readers before search engines.
Bloggers write post that are well optimized for search engines but do nothing for the readers. The whole concept of blogging is based upon creating a forum where ideas can be passed on from blogger to reader. If your content is poor it will not do well in search engines such as Google who are always finding new ways to provide quality content for their readers.
Simplicity is the key
A simple title that says what the post is about always works. There are times when you should be clever but more often that not keeping it simple always works.
Repeat what worked well with previous posts.
You don’t really have to reinvent the wheel. Take posts that worked well and use the same technique in writing other titles.
