Contrary to the popular myth that you have to write a new resume for every job, you can actually use the same resume for each application, instead writing a tailored Cover Letter to point out why you are the best person for the job.
Cover Letters Sell
A decent cover letter gives you an edge in the job field, because it lets your employee pinpoint exactly why you would be the best for the position at hand. See what the employer wants, and be sure to highlight your qualifications pertaining to the field. If they require certain experience, skills, knowledge, qualifications, or qualities, then you should definitely bring them up in your cover letter.
This is also the place to leave off irrelevant information, like working at McDonalds for five years while in school, and opting to only disclose you are most relevant information such as being a corporate assistant or project manager.
When bringing up your qualities, back them up with concrete examples. Teamwork can be exemplified by having played on a sports team all throughout college, or by taking part in several team projects at your last job. If they want public speaking, and you want to show your excellence in public speaking, it can be backed up with a background in speech or debate.
Writing Your Resume
By keeping the same resume, you can avoid having to get it proofread every time you create it. Your cover letter distinguishes the best accomplishments. Make sure that it is neat and formatted and has beautiful grammar and spelling. Print on white paper. Drag up a buddy and make them read it over.
Resumes should fit on the minimum amount of pages necessary, so do not opt for more than a double space per line. Try to keep it below 3 pages unless you have a huge and illustrious background, otherwise the employer will get bored.
Your name is centered at the top in large, bolded print. Write your address and contact details in normal type. Leave off your current work phone number to avoid your current employer from flipping out. If you want to put personal details on your header, then go ahead, but they are not required.
Then comes work experience. Give the title, summary, and some key achievements. Use years when discussing time spent on a given occupation.
Order your resume in order of importance. If your work experience sells best, put it first. If your qualifications sell best, put it in the beginning.
