Many a times people will always try to appeal to people especially in the web sites where you will hear phrases like ‘’innovative strategies’’ among others. Freelancers also find themselves in the same trail and will come up with their own. Freelancers may have gotten such phrases from say Freelancer Directory, unfortunately those happens to be overused and ineffective phrases that will never work.
It is thus a wakeup call for freelancers to come up with important ideas that can work.
Where do you thinks phrases like Newbie/Don’t Have a lot of experience or Just Starting Out would take you? You need to wake up to the biter reality that client will never be moved by emotion to respond to desperate calls from a freelancer.
A freelancer, however inexperienced he is should have something tangible to prove to a client that he is competent enough and ready to take a task. The point is; you have to up your game. Be confident and stop sabotaging yourself for any chance. Dig deeper and search your heart for all positive things you can show
It is time you brought out your ability. You may point about how fast you can accomplish a task. Meeting deadline is something positive you can entice clients with. Your skills may appear to you as inadequate but the real tasks do not require a genius to accomplish. You can always count on your university experience and other tasks you accomplished previously.
‘’Unique experience’’ is another phrase you will find people placing. Well, as much as people like something unique. But what is unique experience in reality? This is a vague term that you shouldn’t expect much from client. Anyone can have a unique experience regardless of where it was only unique to him. Such a phrase will never pay dividends to a freelancer.
You can instead of using the phrase unique experience just narrate a tangible background in a certain area. You may for example put it, “Having worked as a tailor for three years before taking up copywriter I have learnt a lot about peoples attitude towards a new fashion in the industry…”’ Such positive well elaborated tangible remarks give you a plus in the freelance career.
The endless, ’’I’s”, that is I,I,I in every sentence, say “I hold a Masters, I have done, I have visited….”this is pure repletion and also it portrays some kind of selfishness, again it fails to address the clients’ needs. This works against your chances.
You can style up your sentences to avoid repletion. Be proactive, to provide a version that appeals to the readers. You may use the following, “My work with, instead of I worked, you may as well say, “acquiring a Masters in Literature helped, among others. You will be sending the same message but flavoured in a manner that it becomes interesting.
Other phrases like Guru Ninja, Rock Star will also block your chances of appealing to the clients. How do you expect serious clients to view you when you say you are a social media guru, web ninja and the likes? Surely, every phrase has its audience. The said phrases may be popular elsewhere but rarely will they add you points when you are bidding for freelance projects.
To counter phrases like ninja, guru and rock star, point out your competencies. A guru would have expertise in an area, why not point three important achievements, and say in social media? It is important that you come up with an achievement. If you participated in designing a popular website, point that out.
In conclusion, freelancers fail to catch the eyes of the clients or diminish their chances because of poor introduction. You do not have to be complicated to attract clients. Your choice of phrases should be weighed to fit the situation.
